Sogndal FHS corona information
On Thursday, March 12, the announcement came that all schools in Norway would close due to the coronavirus pandemic. We will be 150 years old in 2021, and have only been closed once before - during World War II.
It was therefore sad to have to send students home in the middle of what was supposed to be a week of excitement and growing expectations for upcoming field trips. Instead, a completely new digital everyday life with a steep learning curve awaited a group of active outdoor enthusiasts. After a week, we experience the same motivated and handsome students who participated as best they could.
INSTRUCTION
All schools, including folk high schools, are required to have classes during the time when school buildings are physically closed. It is the first time in our history that we are replacing mountains, glaciers and fjords with a computer screen.
We have made a plan to give us a focal point for the coming weekdays. We want to get the most out of the weeks we have left of the school year. We will do this together!
We publish a new weekly schedule every week that we have created as close to the daily routine at school as possible. The day is divided into three, the session before and after lunch and a social digital session in the evening.
As usual, we start with morning assembly at the usual time, followed by online classes and teaching via Zoom. Here, students receive lectures and assignments to complete within the time frames they have.
After lunch, there will be a mix of core subjects and electives. Here, students can choose what they want to participate in, just like at school.
Our fellows take the initiative for various pranks during this period and post various tasks, challenges and create atmosphere in various digital rooms or on our Facebook page. On Saturday evening we gather at 8 pm for entertainment in the "fireplace room".
Example of a timetable as long as it is digital teaching:
CLOSING PERIOD AFTER EASTER
We hope to start gathering again at Sogndal Folk High School no later than Wednesday, April 15th at 8:30 AM.
It is of course desirable to have a good end to a great school year. We know little about the closing week as long as we do not know how long it will last. As of today, we assume that it will go as planned, so we will provide more information as time goes on.
ECONOMY
Folk high schools, like the rest of the country, have been turned upside down due to the coronavirus. The management is working to clarify the situation and at the same time give our students as good an offer as possible under the current circumstances. All students will continue to receive study support from the Loan Fund, as before, and the rules for converting to scholarships are, as before, linked to participation in the school's activities. Until we know more, student payments will therefore be invoiced as usual. We are crossing our fingers and hoping that we will soon return to a normal school day.
We will follow the Folk High School Council, the highest body of folk high schools, and the recommendations they make to FHS going forward. We ask for your understanding that clarifications regarding this may take some time.
INSURANCE STATEMENTS AFTER CANCELLED STUDY TRIPS
The management is waiting for some answers about refunds for cancellations related to the study trips. What we will not be refunded, the student will have to take out their own travel insurance. The school will create a list of real costs that they will apply for. What the school has canceled/refunded will also be returned to the student. This also applies to the costs related to the trip that the school has not yet paid for. Each student will get a good overview of this overview/documentation as everything is received. It is also on the basis of this documentation that they can send it to your insurance company.
We thank students and their families for their great understanding in the situation surrounding the canceled study trips!
Information will be provided as we develop plans and receive new information from the government and the Folk High School Council. If you have any questions, please contact us on tel: 57 62 75 75 or send an email to the management: sogndal@sogndal.fhs.no
